La Sonnambula by Vincenzo Bellini
This opera is one of the gems of the bel canto repertoire in which the mature style of Bellini is finally crystallised. It is a perfect marriage of melody, declamation and coloratura in the context of romantic pastoral. It demands a cast of four fine principal singers – the title role being one of the most challenging in the literature: - so it is with a real sense of occasion that we mark the return of Rachelle Durkin to Perth to make her role debut.
She will be most ably supported by Aldo Di Toro, Andrew Collis and Zoe Kikiros in a new production by Julie Edwardson – which I am sure will capture the magical simplicity of this great work. The opera has always been associated with great singers (Pasta and Rubini with Mariania and Taccani created the first production) and the tradition of legendary singers (Patti, Jenny Lind, Toti dal Monte, Galli-Curci and Callas) found a memorable expression in Joan Sutherland’s unforgettable performances and recordings.
Rachelle Durkin now takes up the mantle of these greats from the past to recreate the work for our time.
Sung in Italian with English surtitles.
