In an age of internet romance and threatened by the adult world, will Clara discover true love and achieve her right-of-passage? Tchaikovsky’s superb score and characters are brought to life in this magnificent new interpretation for our time.
A note from Ivan Cavallari on The Nutcracker…
I was 16 when I first saw The Nutcracker at the Bolshoi. It was in fact my first night at that theatre shortly after my arrival in Moscow as a young student. I had no seat. A colleague from the school suggested I wait until the lights went down before we would look for a possible place. To my surprise, after a few minutes he indicated to me a seat in the very front row! I was petrified as the curtain was raised and I had the feeling that my heart would explode any minute! Maximova and Vassiliev were the stars on that night and they remained my favourite dancers for many years after.
Revisiting this score now, in preparation for my first West Australian Ballet season, one does realise that Tchaikovsky was, like in his other classical ballets, working hand-in-hand with Petipa. And although he was not very happy about the suggestion of the Master to remove many of the darker aspects of the original story – and was convinced that as an opera Nutcracker would work better – he eventually created the music according to Petipa’s choreographic demands.
Unfortunately, Petipa never got to choreograph his commissioned Nutcracker because he became very ill during the beginning of the rehearsals and it was his assistant, Lev Ivanov, who created the first version of the ballet.
Creating a new version of Nutcracker only makes sense to me if I try to look at the story in a personal way, otherwise it is better to take the original version. Therefore, for this new production, I will be focusing on supporting the talent I have in my company and creating with them, and for them, something very personal and unique. Something that I hope will make you think that only West Australian Ballet, with its incomparable chemistry of dancers, is able to deliver.
