PROKOFIEV Classical Symphony
BRAHMS Double Concerto for Violin and Cello
BEETHOVEN Symphony No.8
RICHARD TOGNETTI Artistic Director and Lead Violin
TIMO-VEIKKO VALVE Cello
In an unmissable display of symphonic brilliance, the concert opens with Prokofiev’s amusing modern take on a Haydn-style symphony and comes to a rousing conclusion with Beethoven’s Eighth Symphony.
What does a concerto for $11 million of instruments sound like?
You’ll find out in November when the Australian Chamber Orchestra performs Brahms’ Double Concerto with Richard Tognetti’s $10 million Guarneri del Gesù violin and Principal Cellist Timo-Veikko Valve’s $1 million Guarneri cello. To give you some idea of how fantastic this will sound: instruments by the Guarneri family have been the first choice of players throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, including Paganini, Heifetz, Menuhin, Stern and Kreisler. Both instruments were purchased by anonymous benefactors and loaned to the ACO last year.
If you’ve never heard the ACO play Beethoven, you’re missing something special. Here’s what a Canberra Times critic said recently: “This well-known [Beethoven] symphony was not approached by Richard Tognetti as a museum piece, but as a living vibrant creation as relevant today as when it was written. After hearing so many routine performances, Tognetti’s ‘no nonsense, sit up and listen approach’ came as a revelation.”
‘The slow movement is an ardent, ecstatic song, the finale a joyous, folksy celebration’ – The Guardian
